More than 2,000 years ago, the great heat of summer led to a superstition among the ancient Romans. They believed that the excessive heat, together with the increased disease and death associated with it, was somehow connected with the rising and setting of the star Canicula - - the Little Dog. They conferred the name of "Dog Days" to those two hot summer months. This unfair bias upon the good name of dogs has long been disproved. Scientists observe that Canicula rises later and later each year; in millions of years, they predict, the star will herald the frost and snow of winter! "The Dog Days' remain a popular phrase among insensitive people. Get a life. Dogs are people too. Just ask one!
